Fourth Week of Lent: Authentic Power is Service

The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola invites us to "consider how God works and labours for me in all creatures upon the face of the earth." (SE #234)

St. Ignatius reminds us that God is constantly pouring his living-giving love into all of creation to keep it in existence. God 'labours' to keep us alive - God's power is made manifest for us as an act of loving service.

Jesus tells us: "...whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be your slave; just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many." (Matthew 20:27-28)

The gift of salvation, given through Jesus, is an act of loving service. When we give of ourselves, we share in Christ's life-giving service, so that the power of his love can flow through us to others. The Lenten practice of alms-giving is an opportunity to reflect on how we can use our gifts for service. Alms-giving is not only about the giving of money to the poor, it also includes the giving of our time and skills that can make a difference for others in need.

During these times of global health crisis, we may find more and more people in our immediate communities who will need help and support. Are our hearts open to that act of service?
