Third Week of Lent: Compassionate Service to Others

icon

Everyday, we hear stories of people and their life experiences.

Some filled with moments of despair and helplessness. Some reveal choices made that were painful and confusing, such as issues of infidelity, addictions and anger. Just like the Samaritan woman (Jn 4:5-42), who must have felt like an outcast and a sinner, because of her relationships. She appears to hide from her people by getting water from the well at noon for fear of judgment for having five husbands.

Jesus, however, responds differently. He goes beyond the cultural norms and dispute between Jews and Samaritans, the righteous and the sinners. Like Jesus, instead of judging others, let us go beyond to offer others understanding and compassion. We can do this by offering a listening ear, acceptance, empathy and hope. Let us not harden our hearts in judging on how another lives their lives.

In our Lenten journey,  Jesus, perhaps, invites us to fast from quick judgment and offer understanding of others ... to offer empathy and listening ear rather than to gossip about their sins and ridicule the life they live.
How can we show more compassion, like Jesus, in our everyday living?
